Channing Tatum talks about "Gambit" Film

Update on X-Men Spin-Off

Channing Tatum has spoken out about the progress on his X-Men spin-off movie, "Gambit". In a recent interview the actor has given a pretty thorough update on how the mutant hero is developing into a unique film. "X-Men: Apocalypse" is currently in production ad 20th Century Fox are looking to emulate Marvel Entertainment's success with their wide spread Avengers franchise. Tatum seems genuinely passionate for the character and his star power seems to be the catalyst for this flick even getting made.

"I love Gambit," says Tatum exclusively in Empire. "I grew up in the South; my father’s from Louisiana. We’d go to New Orleans and I heard all the dialects. It felt so different from the rest of America; it has its own ancient culture. So I identified with that. And he always felt the most real of the X-Men to me. He’s kind of a tortured soul and he’s not a good guy. But he’s not a bad guy, either. He walks his own path. And of course he plays cards and drinks and is a martial-arts badass!”

Gambit has always been a fan-favourite within the X-Men universe and has seen action on the big screen before in actor Taylor Kitsch's disappointing turn in the equally disappointing "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". We're not sure if this previous appearance will connect to the new movie but with the way "Days of Future Past" set about retconning "X-Men: The Last Stand" we're willing to bet no.

“Josh Zetumer just turned in the first draft of the script, and it’s killer," adds Tatum. "None of us were sure how he was going to deal with the X-Men world. But we’re going to be changing some of the tropes of these movies. It’s always about saving the world (laughs), but maybe we’re going to shift things a little but. There’s so many ways you can take [an origin story]. You could do it like Batman Begins, or a different take and go the Guardians Of The Galaxy route. All I can say is, I’m super excited.”

It's becoming increasingly difficult to provide a unique take on a superhero film with so many in the works now but Tatum may be the right man for the job after success at reviving the Jump Street franchise, making male strippers box office gold with he Magic Mike films and even playing Superman for laughs in The Lego Movie. Tatum is still looking for a director but the Gambit movie is still set for an October 7, 2016 release.
