C&C Review - 'All-New Wolverine' #1
The Best There is at What She Does
By Steven Carter
There are a lot of sceptics out there regarding the revolution that the Marvel heroes have recently undergone. Particularly with the replacement of certain male lead characters with female counterparts. Cue the sexist trolls to come out of their caves! Whenever Marvel made an announcement like this online, I would always be dismayed at the staggering amount of comments the post received with outraged “fans” expressing their disgust that a female was taking over the mantle. Times are a changing and Marvel are simply stirring things up to keep us interested.
A prime example of such change comes from the release of issue 1 of All New Wolverine. Written by Tom Taylor and drawn by David Lopez, the story throws you into the thick of the action straight away with X23 pursuing an unseen assailant. The writer seems content with stringing us along but giving us very little information.
It's not long before Laura suits up in the classic yellow and blue costume, pops her claws and goes hunting for her prey. It's also revealed that X23 is working with other mutants. Angel makes an appearance with his awesome fire wings and serves as handy transport for Wolverine!
The typical Marvel style of graphic action mixed with dry humour continues throughout this piece, there's also a nice flashback of X23 and original Wolverine in their X Force days which makes good reading. Call it a case of bad timing, the setting for this comic is in Paris and provides an untimely reminder of the tragic events that unfolded over the weekend.
The art style is great throughout. The cover, done by Bengal, is a striking one which grabs the eye. The title wording looks great as well, sporting two cuts referring to X23’s claws. This issue is certainly one for the collection and in my eye, X23 was the obvious choice to take on the mantle of Wolverine. I'm looking forward to seeing where this new take goes next!
