The DC Universe on film is Finally Here!
'Batman v Superman' is just the start...
By Alex Burns
After the reveal of the new 'Batman v Superman' and 'Suicide Squad' trailers at Comic-Con the DC Universe on film finally felt real. We'd heard the announcement of dozens of DC movies before of course, but there's nothing like seeing it all there on the screen in Live-Action. Marvel have been light years ahead of DC in establishing a comic book universe in the realms of cinema, so it's great to see finally see Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman all together in a similar vein. 'Batman v Superman' will be the first real start of this universe after 'Man of Steel' and the sheer number of comic book characters set to appear in the film and 'Suicide Squad' is seriously impressive.
It's not just those two movies either DC and Warner Bros. have plans to bring the rest of the Justice League onto the big screen in the coming years, The Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and more are set for solo movies and key roles in the Justice League movies . Warner Bros are ready to lay the foundations for a wider DC Universe and director Zack Snyder has got the whole thing mapped out! Check his comments in a recent interview with Empire.
“What we are doing is ground up all the way. It is one giant story. The first thing we had was the Justice League concept. The other movies, in a way, have to support that. That is our Wonder Woman, our Aquaman. They have their own creative concepts that supports them, but they do serve Justice League in the coming together of those heroes.”
“I want all the other directors of the other films to be able to stretch their legs and do what they want, but at the same time there is a big interconnected universe. I have given everyone amazing access to our story, to me, and what we are doing. All the films have like minded conceptual jumping on points.”Producer Charles Roven is no stranger to DC movies after his work on 'The Dark Knight' trilogy and also elaborated on how Warner Bros. and DC will look to connect these unique individual films into a stable interconnected universe.
“We call it the sandbox. It has borders around it, but everybody gets to play in the sandbox. On Suicide Squad, David Ayer has a lot of specific control over his area of the sandbox. Even if he crosses the line a little bit, we see if we can push our boundaries back a little bit,”There's plenty of awesome reveals from the Empire magazine feature as well, notably that Zack Snyder has the entire DC Universe on film mapped out on a whiteboard in his office, oh to be a fly on the wall in that room! There's a lot of cool surprises and secrets from the set that I don't want to spoil here so pick up the September issue and check it out!
'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' is set for release March 25th worldwide, 'Suicide Squad' is set to follow August 5th 2016, Gal Gadot gets her solo movie 'Wonder Woman' June 23rd 2017 before all the heroes get together for 'Justice League: Part One' which hits theatres November 17th. It's going to be a crazy awesome next few years so keep it locked at Cape and Cowl for everything Superhero!
