Wonder Woman Global Opening Makes History

Wonder Woman Global Opening Makes History

In Cinemas Now

By Alex Burns

Wonder Woman set new records for superhero and female led-blockbusters over the course of it's release this weekend, bringing in a global haul of $228 million.

In a historic moment for all women in Hollywood, the latest DC Extended Universe picture grossed $103.3 million from 4,165 theatres domestically, which is the highest opening ever for a female-directed feature. It's also the number one opening for a female-led comic book adaptation with the Paramount's Ghost in the Shell a long way off with $18.6 million in second place.

Internationally Wonder Woman performed above industry expectations with $122.5 million from 55 markets. The China opening of $38 million was particularly impressive as this bettered the openings of fellow superhero blockbusters; Man of Steel, Thor, The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy in that area.

This is a big win for Warner Bros. Pictures and there's every chance Wonder Woman will finish with over $300 million domestically with plenty to add from international markets. With a more modest budget of $150 million dollars compared to other DC Extended Movies, typically closer to $200 million and above, Wonder Woman will recoup it's costs and then some, the added bonus for the Patty Jenkins directed feature, is the ongoing critical praise the film has received, the highest by far of any other film in the connected series.

Wonder Woman goes a long way to reinforce that there is no reason why women should not be afforded the same opportunities as men within the film making industry, hopefully the message gets the discussion going for all parts of our society.
