New Final Fantasy VII Remake Combat Screenshots
To Turn-Base or not to Turn-Base?
By Alex Burns
Square Enix have revealed two new screenshots for their upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake and the new images raise some more questions about the highly anticipated videogame.
The first image showcases a cover option for players as lead hero Cloud Strife is seen ducking behind crates to avoid getting shot to pieces by SHINRA soldiers. The images also offers a new look at the expanded Midgar opening that has been featured heavily in the footage revealed so far for the project.
The second image offers a few more insights into the actual gameplay mechanics in the remake. We can see a command bar in the bottom left with options to attack, use magic, use Materia or use an item. The bottom right also shows another command option that may hint at a character switch option. Cloud and Barret are both featured in the second screen doing battle with the game's first boss - The Guard Scorpion, the right side menu features the two character's health and magic meter but also the return of the ATB (Active Time Battle) gauge. These familiar combat mechanics are straight from the original FFVII, so it looks as though Square Enix may be offering a balance between the traditional turn-based combat systems of old and the more action-centric real-time style of recent entries into the franchise like last year's FFXV. Multiple control of characters or a command option for CPU allies may well offer a new strategic benefit to the Final Fantasy VII experience.
We have had a gameplay trailer last year but as the game continues to go through development changes may have been made. See for yourself and check out the awesome footage below. We may have a new combat trailer to share in the coming weeks so stay tuned to Cape and Cowl.
Mako Reactors are draining the life energy of the planet. The Shinra Corporation rules over a corrupt surveillance state. A few prosper, the rest are left to rot in the city slums of Midgar. That changes tonight.
The elite mercenary and ex-SOLDIER Cloud Strife has been hired by the resistance movement AVALANCHE to fight back. Their mission will change the world forever.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is being released in episodic instalments that will serve to do the original justice in terms of an ultimate adaptation for the modern gaming world. Coming to PS4 no release date has been announced. If you need a Final Fantasy fix check out FFXV and our review in a recent podcast.
