C&C Theory: Could Tony Stark Hold the Key to Defeating Thanos?

What's Powerful Enough to Defeat the Infinity Gauntlet?

By Steven Carter

We all know that Marvel Phase 3 is coming and it's going to be unreal in terms of awesome levels, the uber big bad Thanos is about to finally make his mark on the MCU after nearly a decade of post credit teasers and easter eggs, all hell is about to break loose across the cosmos! The Avengers are about to come to blows with each other in 'Captain America; Civil War' however and will have to seriously get their house in order and band together as Infinity War is just around the corner. Our mighty team of heroes are a force to be reckoned with for sure but Thanos isn't Ultron or a Chitauri alien invasion, he's much, much, MUCH worse! How are the Avengers going to match the might of the Infinity Gauntlet? Well I've got an idea...

Something has been bugging me ever since Iron Man 2. In the 2010 film, we see Tony Stark upgrade his armour to counteract the Palladium poisoning, that was slowly killing him via overuse of the arc reactor. We hear J.A.R.V.I.S congratulate Tony on discovering a new element but the name of this element was never revealed. There was a by story that was released later suggesting that it was Vibranium that was powering the suit. This makes no sense to me being as we find out later on that Cap’s shield is made of Vibranium and that's hardly up there with the teseract. So if it isn't Vibranium, and it's not been referred as “Badassium” due to legal issues, then what the hell is it?! The answer, in my eyes, has been flaunted in in our faces and waved under out noses for the last 5 years.

Tony Stark has replicated the power of the tesseract, which as we all now know is an Infinity stone. After the events of 'Iron Man 2' there have been a few subtle hints at this in the subsequent MCU movies, the stand-out clue here though was when Loki tried to possess Stark with the Sceptre in the first 'Avengers' film and failed. Thor's buddy Dr Selvig later stated in the same film that the tesseract couldn't defend against itself. We now know that the sceptre was the mind stone and also the only thing that could pierce the force field surrounding the tesseract. Another nod towards this theory is simply the appearance of the energy. The new arc gives off the same icy blue aura as the tesseract, as did the blasts from the Red Skull’s tesseract fuelled artillery in 'Captain America: The First Avenger'.

So if Tony is sitting on a universe shattering energy source what does this mean for the future MCU films? Will other infinity stones be replicated? Could Tony create his very own replica Infinity gauntlet (imagine that suit of armour!)? This certainly puts him in the spotlight as even more of a key player when Thanos comes to town. Despite 'Iron Man 2' being a rather mediocre sequel, if this theory turns out to be correct, it could make that film one of the most integral cornerstones of the MCU!

So what do you guys think? Will Tony hold the key to defeating Thanos, even with a tessearact weapon can Thanos be stopped? Let us know your thoughts and keep it locked at Cape and Cowl for more Marvel news!
