Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge dominated the box office over the Memorial Day weekend. Releasing with a domestic haul of around $76.6 million the film was far more impressive with an estimated $208.4 million totalled internationally. This puts a three-day total at around $270.6 million and a worldwide four day total pushing past $300 million.
While the domestic opening may be grim reading for a film budgeted at $230 million, it's the global market where the Pirates franchise has been more recently interested in. The domestic opening of Salazar's Revenge sits at an estimated $62.2 million which is down from the $90.2 million attained by the series' last entry back in 2011, On Stranger Tides. While both of these openings are down on the domestic front, On Stranger Tides went on to gross over $800 million internationally and Salazar's Revenge will be hoping to pull a similar feat. The top international market this new adventure was China, with an estimated $67.8 million, which tells you all the tales you'd need about the Pirates franchise popularity globally.
This debut bolstered Disney's overall domestic haul for the year as the studio passed $1 billion in 2017, the studio to do so in 2017.
Disney is looking to breath new life into the Pirates of the Caribbean series, and this box office haul points to a success looming for fans wanting more adventures with Captain Jack.
