Logan Completes Theatrical Run with Staggering Worldwide Gross

Logan Completes Theatrical Run with Staggering Worldwide Gross

Best X-Men Film Ever?

By Alex Burns

Logan has wrapped it's lengthy theatrical run and 20th Century Fox have now stopped tracking on the Marvel movie and, to put it simply, the results are incredible. Logan was made for a reported marketing and production budget of around $100 - $120 million dollars, the film released with a hard R rating, and somehow managed to round up over $600 million dollars worldwide. If you need anymore proof that the superhero cinema bubble is in no danger of bursting anytime soon, surely Logan is the key piece evidence to throw those concerns out of the window.

The success of Logan is a culmination of several factors, the recent success of 20th Century Fox's Deadpool feature film showed a real interest in the cinema-going public for more adult and concentrated superhero films. Deadpool grossed ove $750 million dollars against a modest $60 million dollar marketing and production budget. Part of the success of Deadpool and now Logan is in exploring a more self-contained comic book adventure, audiences are used to world-building within the their superhero films and a PG-13 rating par the course, Marvel have thrived under this model and DC Comics with WB are trying to capitalise the same interest with their stable of heroes, albeit with mixed results at the time of writing.

By treating Logan as a self-contained, emotional story that concerned itself with being a film before a franchise, 20th Century Fox have earned substantial reward for their gamble. True enough though, this film would not have happened without previous mistakes and lessons learned - Wolverine Origins was a dismal excuse for a Logan solo film and whilst The Wolverine was a step in the right direction, there was still much to be desired and director James Mangold was fortunate enough to get another crack at the character.

Hugh Jackman's final outing as everyone's favourite X-Man delivered in ways that surprised audiences the world over, it's final gross of $603,205,683 worldwide is an incredible success and when compared to other X-Men films you can make the case that it's the most profitable and critically acclaimed entry in the entire series, all without really having to connect to other instalments. Logan stands proudly in the pantheon of not just great superhero films but also those all-time awesome movies as well. Logan serves as a reminder to any would be superhero films - story and characters always trump spectacle and big budgets.
