Polygon got a chance to get hands on with the new entry into the Sonic franchise and it's absolutely incredible to watch. Sit back and enjoy a "leisurely, exploratory, completely uncut and commentary-free stroll through the demo's Green Hill Zone and Studiopolis Zone.
Sonic Mania brings fans back into the 2D world of platform games with nostalgic pixel-style art and core classic gameplay by reimagining iconic Zones and Acts from Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles. Before you get too lost in nostalgia of the 1990s, the game is also adding in completely new Zones with all-new Acts and bosses into the mix.
After a string of lackluster console efforts over the last couple of years, it will be great to see Sonic and company return to form. Fingers crossed SEGA and developers Headcannon and PagodaWest Games can deliver on the promising footage we've seen here.
The game is part of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, and returns to the 2D gameplay and visual style of the original Sega Genesis-era games. It is scheduled for release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows in early 2017.
