Spider-Man: Homecoming Impresses with $250 Million Worldwide Opening

Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming released to eager audiences this weekend and the box office numbers are truly super. The wall-crawler put in a sensational performance, pulling in an estimated $117 million at the domestic box office. This makes it the third largest opening weekend of 2017 so far and stands as the second largest opening for a Spider-Man feature film, it is also the largest opening for a MCU solo hero "1st entry" film ahead of 2008's Iron Man (both without adjusting for inflation).

Showing in 4348 theatres, Spider-Man: Homecoming had no trouble in convincing audiences to turn up in droves to the third version of the Marvel character in as little as 15 years. Taking the #1 spot with that $117 million, the film also dominated the international box office with openings in several key territories and a haul of $140 million from 56 markets. The global opening now stands at $257 million, the film saw particular success in South Korea with $25,8 million over five days plus an impressive tally of $11.8 million from audiences here in the UK. Homecoming should have plenty of legs for the summer season and has big openings to look forward to in France, Germany, Spain, Japan and China.

The impressive opening for Spider-Man: Homecoming domestically also compares favourably with other hits this year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 and Wonder Woman, both these films have gone on to break the $350 million mark on home turf and were also received well by critics. With this in mind, Spidey should have no trouble matching these numbers and could even breach the $400 million mark, especially if it holds well over the next few weeks.
