J.K. Simmons Joins Justice League: Part One as Commissioner Gordon!
Oscar Winner Returns to the Superhero Genre
By Alex Burns
J. Jonah Jameson is Commissioner Gordon! Fear not guys and gals this isn't a crisis on infinite earths or anything like that but just some classy casting news for Justice League: Part One. That's right folks, Oscar Winner J.K. Simmons will take on the role of Batman's eternal ally, Commissioner Gordon for the upcoming Justice League movie and the more you think about it the more you fall in love with the idea.
The casting news brings Simmons back to the superhero genre after his hilarious stint as J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films alongside Tobey Maguire's web head. This is also going to make Jim Gordon fans happy as we can well and truly put to bed all those rumors that the character would be killed off before the events of Batman v Superman which releases on March 25th.
The fact that an actor of Simmons pedigree is attached to the role suggests Warner Bros. still hold the character in high regard after Gary Oldman's exceptional portrayal of the only honest cop in Gotham in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. It will certainly be interesting to see how this new take on the character pans out in a world filled with the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman, of course what kind of relationship Gordon has with Ben Affleck's Batman is ripe for speculation.
Justice League is being split into two films and will be directed by Zack Snyder who is beyond excited about bringing Batman, Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) together on-screen for the first time. The heroes will team up to tackle an as-of-yet unconfirmed enemy, although Darkseid is heavily rumoured. Justice League: Part One will start shooting in mid-April and is set for release on Nov 17, 2017 with Part Two hitting theatres on June 14, 2019.
if you're itching to get in the know on Jim Gordon then check out Frank Miller's epic Batman: Year One miniseries, re-watch Oldman's nuanced performance alongside Christian Bale and Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight and for a more fantastical spin there's Ben Mckenzie's grizzled take in FOX's Gotham TV series.
We're looking forward to more casting news for the upcoming DC Universe On Film but until then make sure to let us know what you think of the casting.
