Op-Ed - Benedict Cumberbatch is Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange!

Op-Ed - Benedict Cumberbatch is Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange!

So what can we expect?

An Op-Ed by Steven Carter

My opinion on Doctor Strange as a character has been somewhat mixed. I was never really interested enough to pick up a copy of his solo outings but when he gets included in joint ventures with other heroes, I do tend to get a bit more caught up in the plot. Since Marvel studios announced that Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing the Sorcerer Supreme, the film has quickly become my most eagerly anticipated of the phase three collection. I like to think that this film has the same potential to blow away audiences like Guardians of the Galaxy did. It seems Marvel has a great knack so far, for introducing rather niche characters to the MCU and making it work. (In Kevin Feige we trust! What could we hope to see then? Will we get another humour filled re-imagining like GOTG? Or could we possibly get something very different?

The Official Logo for the film
One thing that I suspect might happen is that we may not get the stereotypical superhero origin story. Stephen Strange has already been mentioned by name in the MCU. During the second Captain America film, Hydra agent Jasper Sitwell named him amongst other avengers as one of the targets deemed a threat by Hydra’s algorithm. He was also more subtly referred to back in Sam Rami’s Spider-Man 2 when J. Jonah Jameson was coming up with names for Doc Ock. Although these are two different universes, it does suggest the good doctor is already well established. Heck. The man can travel between multiple realities so who’s to say it isn’t the same guy eh?

It remains to be seen how the character will be introduced
I would think we may get flashbacks into his past as a way to help develop the character but that may be as far as it goes. This won’t be the first movie outing for the Sorcerer, he did appear in a live action film back in 1978 and again in an animated feature in 2007.

The Animated Dr Strange film from 2007
The animated film had some very creepy sequences involving demons and possessed children. I wonder if they may take this into consideration. Could we possibly have our first horror film in the current MCU? With “Sinister” and “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” director Scott Derrickson at the helm, it’s looking like it might be headed that way! This would certainly be an interesting development. Considering Strange’s arch nemesis is a fiery headed demon named Dormammu who looks scary as hell, there’s certainly potential for this to be on par with the first Blade film. That being said, I doubt we will be seeing an 18 rating on a mainstream franchise where all other films are mainly 12/12A certificates. So expect this film to tone back on the gore and naughty language.

Dormammu could be the most terrifying villain yet in the MCU
The next question that springs to mind is how will Dr. Strange fit into the movie Universe? The most magic-y hero we have seen so far is Thor. His existence has been explained as being a powerful humanoid alien from a world where science and magic are one and the same. The 9 realms merely appear to be a network of planets that Asguardians are able to reach via the Biofrost. With this information, has Dr Strange managed to tap into this level of magic/science? Kevin Feige has said in interviews before that “magic” as the Marvel universe understands it, was inspired by theories shown in the mini TV series “Cosmos" discussing quantum physics etc. Other sources of inspiration came from the various works of Stanley Kubrick, anime director Hayao Miyazaki and even the 1999 film “ The Matrix”. A great combination of sci fi and philosophical sources of inspiration. It seems like they will continue with these ideals, the Red skull seemed to be onto something when he was able to weaponise the power from the tesseract. Since we are well into the build up to the infinity war maybe we will see another infinity stone? So far we have seen the Space gem (the tesseract), the mind gem, (the sceptre), the reality gem (the aether) and the power gem (the orb). My personal opinion is that Strange will be tapping into the power of one or even two of the remaining gems (soul and/or time).

There's plenty of powerful magical items already on display in the MCU
I also wonder how close hey will stick to the comic book imagery. Will we see him dressed in psychedelic pyjamas? Will he be sporting that nifty goatee and grey bangs? Who knows! It’s all speculation at this point. I for one will be eagerly awaiting the first trailer. "Dr Strange" is set for release November 4th 2016, for everything Superhero keep it locked here at Cape and Cowl.

Your First Look at Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor in Batman V Superman!

Your First Look at Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor in Batman V Superman!

The speculation is over, Luthor shall be bald!

It's been over a year since the casting was first announced but today the we’re finally getting a first official look at Jesse Eisenberg as he will appears the highly anticipated film "Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice". Eisenberg was a surprise choice to play the Man of Steel's most famous adversary but this black and white photo may put some concerns to rest, it's pretty creepy, he's even got a twitchy eyebrow that just screams megalomaniac. Take a look at the photo below via Entertainment Weekly.

Jesse's take on Luthor has been rumoured to be a modern take on the businessman of today, more evil mark Zuckerberg than wig wearing Donal Trump also a few reports had the actor wearing towels to cover his head and even a long wavy wig. Don't let the familiar bald look fool you though, the character won't be the same villain we've seen on the big creen before, Director Zack Snyder has also spoke to EW in regards to that;

“He’s not any of the Lexes that you’ve seen, that’s for sure, other than him being a captain of industry and one person to the world and another person to himself. And bald, of course.”

So far, so vague, Synder did elaborate a little however;

“Our Lex is disarming and he’s not fake, He says what he believes and he says what’s on his mind. If you can unravel the string and decipher what he means, it’s all there.”

Sounds promising, it'll be interesting to see how this new Luthor squares up against Henry Cavil's Superman and lets not forget Ben Affleck's brand new Batman. Hopefully we'll get a glimpse soon in a teaser trailer, that would be most appreciated Warner Bros.

"Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice" will be out here on March 25 next year, you got it, one year from today. Mark your calenders people!

While this had been rumoured by a lot of outlets for some time it now seems to be official that Joe and Anthony Russo will be directing Marvel Studios’ massive two-film event Avengers: Infinity War. Batman: Arkham Knight 7 Minute Gameplay trailer!

Batman: Arkham Knight 7 Minute Gameplay trailer!

Videogame also receives a new release date...

We've got some good news and some maybe not-so-good news, we'll start with the not so good. Rocksteady's hotly anticipated Batman: Arkham Knight was due to release June 2 this year, a date originally pushed back from October 2014, it's been delayed again but thankfully for no where near as large a time span. Arkham knight will bow June 23rd instead, when a game looks this good I have no problem with a studio deciding to take more time to make sure the title releases without issue. I'd much rather wait  than have a few game-bugs and clitches ruin my experience. That being said my levels of excitement for this game are threatening to put me in the hospital, so for the sake of my health let's hope Rocksteady stick with June 23rd!

Now on to the good news! Check out what Game Director Sefton Hill said about the delay:

“Batman: Arkham Knight will now launch worldwide on June 23, 2015. We’re a developer that hates to make any compromises, so we are sorry to say this means it’s going to be just a little bit longer until you can play the epic conclusion to the Arkham trilogy. As a reward for your patience and understanding, and to make the wait even more unbearable, we are pleased to whet your appetite with a new gameplay video of Batman: Arkham Knight.”

You catch that last part? Brand new Gameplay video! Delay no longer check out the video below, it's kinda awesome.

Gal Gadot talks playing Wonder Woman in "Batman V Superman"

Batman V Superman star Gal Gadot speaks out about playing Wonder Woman!

The actress talks casting, working out and superpowers!

Gal Gadot has given an interview in Israel and she has spoken quite openly about her upcoming role as Wonder Woman in Warner Bros "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice". You can check out the translated comments below.

When she got the official notice she got Wonder Woman she was in the clouds. Literarily. She was on her way to a job in New York waiting for the answer.
Gal: “I never had to wait so long for a reply. It was a month and a half of torture. It was a crazy roller-coaster. I couldn’t talk about it to anyone. On the day they promised a reply I was flying to NY for another gig. When the plane landed I saw I had a lot of missed calls. I called my agent still sitting in the plane with the belt on. She told me ‘ Congratulations! You got the part.’ During the flight I set next to a really nice man. A scientist from The Weizmann Institute of Science. He talked the entire flight about quantum physics. Now, imagine me, sitting on the plane, looking for a little piece of privacy, burring my head between my legs and starting to scream ‘Oh my god!’ again and again, because I just can’t believe it. Then I hang up the phone and he looks at me like ‘what just happened?’ and asks if everything is alright. I tell him ‘ I can’t really say anything but you will probably read about it tomorrow in the paper.'”

Preparations for the role took many months during which she worked with a personal trainer that taught her everything a super heroine needs to know in order to take down villains.
Gal: “It was very intensive. When I was young I was a real tomboy so I really enjoyed the experience. I see Alma wanting to dress like a princess and put on lipstick and it surprises me. I asked my mom if I was like that too but she said all I wanted back then was to play ball, sweat, and scrape my knees.

Gal Gadot stars alongside Henry Cavil (Superman) and Ben Affleck (Batman)
Interviewer: “When your casting was announced a lot of comic book nerds said that your body didn’t match Wonder Woman’s.”
Gal: “Don’t be shy. They said that I was too skinny and my boobs were too small.” She laughs.

Interviewer: “Were you offended?”
Gal: “I’m really lucky nothing in my life was instantaneous. When I was younger I would take criticism really hard. But now it mostly amused me. The true amazons had one boob so it won’t bother them in their archery. So it’s not going to be like real amazons. We always try to make everyone happy but we can’t.

Interviewer: “But isn’t it embarrassing that your breast size became a topic of international discussion?”
Gal: “No. After they asked me here, In Israel, if I have eating disorders and why am I so skinny, they said my head was too big and my body was like a broomstick I can take anything. It’s just empty talk. I understand that part of what I’m doing means being exposed. And part of being exposed is being under fire (criticism).”

Gal Gadot has been working out to achieve the look of an Amazon Warrior!
Interviewer: “Between all this you have a career to run. You are on the fast track to be a comic and action start. How important is it for you not to be taken as just an action star?”
Gal: “I will never take for granted the job I have right now. (she actually said ‘I will never spit into the well from which I drink from’. It’s a phrase in Hebrew that means she won’t make fun or look poorly on what she is doing right now. I forgot the equivalent in English ). Playing Wonder Women is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I can’t describe to you how much I wanted to play this character without even knowing I wanted to play her. I met a lot of people from the industry in LA for meetings. They always asked me ‘what’s your dream role?’, and I never could define it. I always answered that I wanted to play a women that is strong and will be a source for women empowerment. I don’t want to play a damsel in distress that needs to be saved. I don’t like it when women in the movies are shown as the victims. I always thought that if I could send out a massage I want to show the strong side of a woman and how she can handle tough situations.”

Interviewer: “Someone heard your prayers.”
Gal: “Yes, I get to play the strongest most empowering woman ever – Wonder Woman. I’m so grateful and I thank god every day. I want to devour it and enjoy every bite. “

Interviewer: “By the way, what are Wonder Woman’s powers?”
Gal: “She has unbelievable endurance. She is exceptionally strong. She can jump really high and practically fly. She know tons of martial arts styles. She is a strong and serious Woman.”

Batman will be "Bogeyman" in Suicide Squad?

Batman to feature in Suicide Squad?

He'll be a "Bogeyman" to the government

We've got a great scoop that the new Batman, played by Ben Affleck, will appear as a shadowy background figure in the forthcoming Supervillain epic "Suicide Squad", according to reports. Umberto Gonzalez, aka El Mayimbe of the often reliable Latino Review blog, posted a description of the Dark Knight’s role in the Warner Bros/DC Comics film on Instagram.

“According to sources, in the film Batman is some sort of big bogeyman that the government REALLY hates,” he wrote. “Get this, prior to the events in Batman V Superman, THE JOKER is the only one to really ever meet him or know him and that’s why he’s so important to Amanda Waller. They have footage of Batman in action which they watch. There is a bit of dialogue where they say Batman is the key to tracking down all ‘the supers’. Very cool stuff.”

"Suicide Squad" stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis and Jared Leto
All of this is of course rumour at the moment but with the film not to far away from release this ties up with a lot of info we've been hearing about Ben Affleck appearing in the film. We think this is a great way to show how Batman has remained so under the radar until the arrival of Superman in "Man of Steel". We've had dark and brooding caped crusaders before but already it seems this new Batman will be a complete mystery to the public and that is something we can definitely get behind. This also adds to the idea will be that this sets up The Joker as a potential adversary for Batman in his next solo film, with the two having a previous encounter which led to The Joker being imprisoned. We'll have more on the future of the Batman and DC universe up for you in the coming weeks keep it locked here at Cape and Cowl for everything Superhero.

Op-Ed - Hawkeye VS Green Arrow!

Hawkeye vs. Green Arrow

Which Archer takes the Bullseye?

An Op-Ed by Steven Carter

Not an easy one to call by any means. I don’t make this easy on myself do I? Why couldn’t I do something easy like Darkseid vs Howard the Duck? Never mind, here goes nothing. When you get two similar characters across rival comic book companies, it’s only natural for the fanboys to start endless debates, making the case for why their hero is the best. It’s the closest thing us nerds get to a derby football match, only the blood and violence is imaginary.

Clint Barton - Hawkeye

Created by Stan Lee and Don Heck

First Appearance - Tales of Suspense #57 (Sept. 1964)

So lets kick off with the Marvel corner. Clint Barton’s past has been chequered to say the least. He first appeared as an enemy along with Black Widow against Iron Man in “Tales of Suspense” in 1964, but shortly afterwards, turned away from his wrongdoings and joined up with the avengers. Before all of this he was an orphan, who ran away along with his brother to the circus. He honed his acrobatic skills under the eye of the Swordsman and became the star attraction as “the world’s greatest marksman”. He has been one of the many characters that Marvel like to kill off from time to time, most notably was in the Avengers Disassembled storyline where he brought down a Kree battleship by wrestling with an enemy soldier and using his jet pack to fly into the ship’s engine. You can’t get much more rock and roll when it comes to a hero’s death! But as we all know with Marvel, they never stay dead for long.

Right up until the mid 2000’s, he has been sporting what appears to be a medieval archer’s outfit with a purple venetian mask. Once we had been introduced to the Hawkeye in the Avengers movie, the character adopted a more refined and tactile look. Closer to the Ultimate Hawkeye getup. Hawkeye has an incredible set of skills when it comes to armed and unarmed combat. Like the villain Bullseye, he is able to turn anything into a deadly projectile. He has even used his own damn fingernails to dispatch several henchmen! He is no stranger to a blade either. Back in his circus days, he was trained by none other the Swordsman. Going by namesake alone, that’s gotta count for something! He was also trained under the watch of Captain America in terms of tactics, martial arts and hand-to-hand combat. Archery wise, his skills are nothing short of incredible. He has even held his own against multiple enemies and shoot specific targets without the use of his eyes. He is capable of firing multiple arrows at a single target in a few seconds, and directly hit small targets in the greatest of distances.

Finally we can talk about his arsenal. Both characters are top notch archers and both possess a wide range of trick arrows. From the pure awesome to the downright ridiculous. Hawkeye’s most noteable include; Sonic arrows, Net arrows, Acid tips, even parachute arrows. One that particularly caught my eye was the USB arrow. I find it hard at the best of times to plug in my memory stick into the computer the right way up, so if this guy can do it with a bow and arrow, he’s definitely got some mad skills (yo). The more powerful arrows he has used mainly involve the fantasy science materials of Marvel. Arrows made of Adamantium, Vibranium and even Pym Particles! I would NOT want to get on the wrong side of an expert marksman in posession of any of these arrows! (If you don’t know what pym particles are, wait until the new Ant Man film comes out this Summer!).

Oliver Queen - Green Arrow

Created by Morton Weisinger and George Papp

First Appearance - More Fun Comics #73 (Nov. 1941)

Now we arrive at the DC corner, Green Arrow first appeared in “More Fun” comics back in 1941. He had a bit of an identity crisis early on as parallels were drawn between him and one certain Dark Knight but over the years, the writers at DC have developed this character into his own unique persona. His origin has been re-written many times. For this segment, we will forget his golden age archeology beginnings and focus on the more familiar silver age millionaire origin. Oliver Queen had a very different background. Instead of running away to the circus he was born into a wealthy family and enjoyed a playboy lifestyle. One fateful day saw him thrown off his cruise ship and become stranded on Starfish Island. It was here where he learned how to survive and hone his hunting skills, developing trick arrows in order to help catch food. He also fashioned a green suit to help with camouflage. When he eventually got back to the mainland, after helping a captured crew overthrow some drug smugglers, he got his taste for justice and resumed crime fighting under the name “Green Arrow”.

Like Hawkeye, Queen has been killed off and resurrected. Trapped on a plane, holding a bomb that was rigged to blow if Queen removed his hand, rather than face having his arm torn off by Superman, he elected to sacrifice himself to save thousands. Green Arrow’s costume was fashioned on Robin hood. A figure that Queen was obsessed with as a child. Given that Robin Hood stole from the rich to give to the poor and for someone of Queen’s
upbringing to continue using that imagery does imply a sense of irony.

He is proficient in several forms of martial arts including judo, wing chun, taekwondo, as well as eskrima. Some view him as a martial arts master, he has managed to take on seven people at once. He spent a long time improving his fighting skills and and ended up being taught by some of the world's finest martial arts teachers and even received training from Natas, who also trained Deathstroke. He has displayed, on numerous occasions, that he is an expert in acrobatics and often uses this skill while evading enemy fire. Archery is by far Oliver's preferred method of hunting. He has managed to split a drop of water as it left a tap, the most impressive show of his skills was a scene where he shot two arrows down the barrels of two separate guns whilst in mid-flip. Stealth wise, he possesses enough skill in order to sneak up on a cougar without it noticing. Queen is also very proficient with a sword, though it is not his weapon of choice.

Arsenal wise, again a wide variety of trick arrows spanning from Kryptonite, hand cuff arrows (don’t ask), tear gas arrows and how could we forget the infamous boxing glove arrow? Most worryingly, one type of arrow he has in his possession contains a miniaturised atomic warhead! What the hell was he thinking there!?

So there we have it. We have the facts, now it comes to deciding who comes out on top. If it came to an all out fight with the two characters, I can imagine it lasting for an awful long time. When you add various elements to the scenario though, I’d imagine the result can be swayed in either character’s favour. If there were plenty of stealth elements involved, I would think that would play right into Green Arrows hands and he would come out victorious. If the bows were taken out of action, I would say that Hawkeye would edge it. He appears to have better sword skills, plus if he hadn’t cut his nails in a while, then I wouldn’t rate Queens chances. Archery wise, Without the super powered arrows? That is without doubt the toughest one to call. We're on the fence, it's a tie! If faced with an all out conflict, no limitations to weapons? I would fear for whatever area that event would happen in. For sure, all that would be left, would be an irradiated wasteland with two skeletons grabbing each other’s throats...
