My oh my! Would you just look at all these insane tie-in promotional products for Warner Bros. Pictures' Justice League. I had no idea I could consume a beverage in so many different shaped cups! The images come via Golden Link who are the concession partners for Justice League, they all feature Superman as well and he's been kept under tight wraps marketing wise after the finale of last year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Joss Whedon Directing Justice League in Wake of Snyder Family Tragedy

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Joss Whedon has taken on directing duties for Warner Bros. Pictures' Justice League film. Zack Snyder had previously worked on the film up until March but a family tradegy led to the Man of Steel director having to step down, his daughter, Autumn, sadly committed suicide at the start of the year. Zack and his wife Deborah Snyder, who also acts as producer on Justice League, have moved away from the project to focus attention completely on their other children.

Initially returning to work on Justice League for two weeks following his daughter's passing, Snyder had to make the decision to pass the reigns of Justice League as it became apparent there were more important things for him to focus on.

“In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was way through it,” Zack Snyder tells the trade. “The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all consuming… I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’m having a hard time.”

WB initially suggested pushing the planned November 2017 release of the film back but Snyder resisted and now Joss Whedon will complete the project in time for the end of year. Whedon's work speaks for itself with Buffy the Vampire Slayer proving one of the most successful TV shows of recent times and 2012's Avengers becoming the highest grossing superhero film of all time. Whedon is also working on a solo Batgirl film for the current DC Comics' universe on screen that includes Snyder's Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and a plethora of upcoming superhero movies.

“We’re not introducing any new characters,” says WB President Toby Emmerich of the change in directors. “It’s the same characters in some new scenes. He’s handing a baton to Joss but the course has really been set by Zack. I still believe that despite this tragedy, we’ll still end up with a great movie.”

Following the critical backlash of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and David Ayer's Suicide Squad, the current DCEU is in no shortage of bad press and it's clear Snyder felt some pressure to have to share this personal tragedy so as to avoid insensitive speculation.

“Here’s the thing, I never planned to make this public,” he says. “I thought it would just be in the family, a private matter, our private sorrow that we would deal with. When it became obvious that I need to take a break, I knew there would be narratives created on the internet. They’ll do what they do. The truth is … I’m past caring about that kind of thing now.”

Whilst we here at Cape and Cowl have openly criticised Batman v Superman and Snyder's directorial work on that picture, we of course extend our deepest sympathies to the Snyder family during this difficult time and look forward to seeing Justice League in theatres, as Zack Snyder intended, on November 17 2017.

The DCEU Expands

Variety are bringing word that Joss Whedon will write, direct and produce a new film based on DC Comics' Batgirl character. The feature film will take place within the DCEU that is continuing this year with Wonder Woman and Justice League. The film will focus on the original Batgirl, Barbara Gordon.

Joss Whedon is no stranger to adapting comicbook characters to the big screen, his work for Marvel including The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Whedon is also praised for his comicbook writing and iconic television work including Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Firefly franchise. This will be his first DC Comics' film project after having been attached to a Wonder Woman solo film over a decade ago.

Whedon is notable for telling rich character-driven stories and is somewhat of a specialist in telling sweeping epic adventures featuring strong female heroes. The Batgirl news comes soon after the reveal that Warner Bros. Pictures are also developing several Batman related projects within the DCEU. There's of course the Batman solo film with Matt Reeves attached to helm but also a solo Nightwing film with Chris McKay directing and the Gotham City Sirens movie which is in active development with Margot Robbie returning as Harley Quinn as well. There's every chance Batgirl could make an appearance in any one of those films ahead of her own solo movie.

Chris Hemsworth discusses Thor and Avengers: Age of Ultron!

Plus he reveals his favourite Avenger

 

With the release of  Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron around two months away, expect a lot of updates from the cast who will start promoting the films any day now. IGN have posted an interesting interview with Chris Hemsworth, he describes Thor's role in the anticipated sequel and offers up a few new tidbits of information, you can check out a few choice parts below and for the full interview head here.


Question: Talk a little bit about your reaction when you first got the script.
Chris Hemsworth: It was awesome. Coming off of Thor 2 and The Avengers, I couldn't wait to read this [script]. And I just loved how it upped it in a way that wasn't just bigger and flashier. I mean everything had been amplified, but in an intelligent way. All the stories are relevant to what's going on in the world as far as the exponential growth of technology, and artificial intelligence, and the questions of the good versus the bad of the AI world. It's obviously heavily influenced by the times and that debate. He [Joss Whedon] has managed to bring all of the Avengers back in and give them a relevant reason to be there. [He's] justified the conflict. It's a tricky balance. I'm glad I'm not the one writing the thing and having to pull that off.

Q: What’s something that Thor gets to do in this film that he hasn't done before?
Hemsworth: He’s loosened up a bit. I think we lost some of the humor and the naïveté and the sort of fish out of water quality of Thor from the first film into the second one. And there were things I loved about what we did in the second one too, tonally. But that sense of fun was -- I would have liked it to be there a bit more. Joss, I think, felt the same way. So there's more humor in Thor and because he's been on Earth, he's a little more accessible now. He's off Asgard now so he doesn't have to be as regal and kingly as he is in that world, which is nice. I enjoy that more. It's sort of a box, which he gets to step out of off Asgard. You know that stuff just looks out of place, whereas here you can have a gag with the guys and he can be at a party scene in civilian clothes, which is nice...There's a party scene and I was in a nice coat and jeans and the guys just kept joking, 'When did Thor go shopping? Did he buy this online or did Jane do it? Or did he actually go shopping?' And so you don't see him go shopping, but the question’s raised because he's not dressed in his own Asgardian attire. Yeah, he's more human in the film definitely.

Q: Can you talk about the fight sequence you’re filming today [featuring Thor battling The Vision]?
Hemsworth: This is their first meeting, really. And it's, as you can see, it's conflicted. It's a big fight scene.

Q: Each time we see Thor his power and abilities keep getting amped up. Are we going to see his abilities manifest in a new way? Will he be more powerful or more trained? 
Hemsworth: Yeah, I mean in this instance you see it's hand-to-hand combat because [that becomes possible] if someone is of his equal strength - or more so than him. He can afford to do that, whereas with the people who were far less capable than him and not as strong I said, 'Let's make sure he's picking up cars, and throwing them, and ripping things in half, and spending a bit more time up in the air and using the elements, as opposed to being stuck kind of in a hand-to-hand fights with the bad guys.' So, yeah, I think it keeps getting kind of amped up and more elaborate. Yeah, we see him fly a bit more.

Q: Other than Thor, who is your favorite Avenger and why?
Hemsworth: I mean, I love the fun Tony gets to have. In sort of the lack of boundaries I think that he's getting. He has room to move so much and so many things and yet always bring it back and be personal and grounded no matter how sort of zany it gets. I just love watching Robert [Downey Jr.] work in this setting. It's pretty special.

What's up with Ultron's Powers and the origins of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is one of the most anticipated films of the year, Director Joss Whedon has offered up some information as to how we can expect some elements of the film to play out on screen.

In an interview with Empire, Whedon revealed how Ultron's abilities in the film will differ from the comic books saying, “The powers in comic books – they’re always like, ‘And then I can reverse the polarity of your ions!’ – well, we have to ground things a lot more. With Ultron, we have to make him slightly less omnipotent because he’d win. Bottom line."

He continued, "Also, having weaknesses and needs and foibles and alliances and actually caring what people think of him, all these things, are what make him a character and not just a tidal wave. A movie about a tidal wave can be great, but it’s different than a conflict between one side and the other. When Ultron speaks, he has a point. He is really not on top of the fact that the point he’s making has nothing to do with the fact that he’s banoonoos. And that he hates the Avengers for bringing him into this world, and he can’t really articulate that or even understand how much he hates humanity. He thinks he’s all that. That guy is very fun to write. He combines all the iconic stuff. The powers he has are slightly different – he can control certain things, he’s not just firing repulsors.”

 Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will be making their debuts in the sequel. The filmmaker went on to explain the origins of the characters and how they're unique powers will translate into the already established Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“[Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch] have an origin but it’s largely described. They’re already good to go by the time we’re up and running. You don’t want to fall into Spider-Man 3 territory – and I say that as a guy who actually thinks pretty well of that movie, there’s some great stuff in that movie – but there comes a point where you’re overloaded with frontstory, backstory, origin story and it becomes very hard to juggle," Whedon said. "My instinct is always, ‘Don’t put in more, work with what you have.’ But I insisted on putting in more in this movie because I felt I needed more villains. I needed someone for Ultron to talk to, and I need more trouble for the Avengers. As powerful as Ultron is, if he builds more Ultrons, they’re Ultrons. There’s no reason for him to ever to talk to them because they’re him. ‘I need you to – I KNOW! I AM TOTALLY YOU! I DID IT EARLIER! I know that because I am also me.’ That’s not a good conversation. Actually, it sounded pretty good there. I think I’m onto something.”
