David Harbour Talks Taking on Hellboy

David Harbour Talks Taking on Hellboy

Reboot Begins Filming Next Month

By Alex Burns

David harbour is taking on the role of Hellboy in the upcoming horror reboot Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Stranger Things actor opened up about how this film and his version of the iconic comic character will differ from what we've seen before.

“Ron (Pearlman) sort of embraces this machismo in himself and in Hellboy, that kind of is this thing, and I really like it and I think it’s super fun and it’s a super fun performance, but I think Hellboy has a certain psycho dynamic where occasionally he has to prove that he’s the lion and has to roar, but I think he struggles with his own masculinity. But I don’t think he needs that as much as maybe those other movies did. I have a bit of a different take on his capability or his slickness. I sort of think that for me he’s a little less skilled at constructing that persona.”

Harbour also spoke about how the film won't waste too much time setting up the origins of the character and is more focused on telling a new story on-screen.

“There is some (explanation of Hellboy), but it’s not really an origin story movie. We kind of pick up the movie like we’re running and gunning. We do have a little bit of stuff where we show stuff, but it really is a story and you just drop in with this guy. So in a way, I feel like that’s kind of what Indiana Jones was. You start with him stealing the idol, but also you do go back to the university and you understand he’s an archaeologist, you understand these things, but this is just a guy who goes and steals idols and fights Nazis and wants to steal the Arc of the Covenant. But you never go back when he’s a kid and you’re like, ‘How did he become Indiana Jones?’ It’s like no, we accept that this is Indiana Jones and I think that’s kind of what our story does too. You accept that there’s this half-demon guy running around the world and being a paranormal investigator and solving crimes and also dealing with his own issues at the same time.”

Along with Harbour the main cast includes, Ian McShane as Professor Trevor Bruttenholm (aka Professor Broom), Milla Jovovich as villain the Blood Queen, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan, and Ed Skrein as Major Ben Daimio.

Ron Pearlman & David Harbour Talk Hellboy Reboot

Ron Pearlman & David Harbour Talk Hellboy Reboot

Pretty Cool Dinner Guests

By Franco Dionisio

With the news that Hellboy is getting a reboot in the form of Rise of The Blood Queen, actor Patton Oswald has hosted a dinner bringing Ron Pearlman and David Harbour together. Pearlman of course starred in the first two on-screen iterations of Mike Mignola's comic character as Big Red in Hellboy and Hellboy: Rise of The Golden Army. David Harbour will take on the role for the upcoming horror reboot and he's chatted a bit to yahoo about the role and shared a make-up test picture for the iconic Right Hand of Doom.

“Not since Bill Clinton, Menachem Begin, and Anwar Sadat has there been such an epic summit yelding such a little result,” Perlman posted to Facebook. “Apparently Patton Oswalt aka balvenieboy thought it was a good idea to host David Harbour and yours truly for a detente dinner. The result: i gained 3 pounds and ruined my liver. Meanwhile, good luck kid! Signed, the babe.”

“Patton brokered a peace, it was incredible,” Harbour told Yahoo. “I had reached out to Ron because I’m a big fan of his. He’s a really sweet guy and we wanted to just talk shop, and I just thought Patton Oswalt would be the perfect chaperone in case Ron and I started to make out or we started dancing too close or if we started getting in a fistfight.”

“I would not be doing Hellboy if it wasn’t for ‘Stranger Things,’ no,” Harbour added. “I would not. A lot of people responded to it. It’s got a lot of elements — Hopper is a very complicated character and has a lot of levels. And he is heroic, but he’s messed up, and I think they want this for this Hellboy as well. I think the films did a certain thing, the comics do a certain thing. Hellboy is kind of a neurotic, messed-up individual who’s destined for a horrible fate. He’s destined to become the beast of the apocalypse. Whenever he shows up and does the right thing, people throw beers at him and show up with pitchforks and he still manages to do the right thing. I think it’s funny and it’s sweet and it’s weird, and hopefully I can bring that to it as well.”

Hellboy Movie Reboot Details Revealed

Hellboy Movie Reboot Details Revealed

A Darker Vision

By Franco Dioniso

A new Hellboy movie is in development and we've got some cool new details to share with you all. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola announced the project on his official Facebook page earlier this week and since then we've learned that Millennium Films is in negotiations with producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin to reboot Dark Horse Comics property. The film’s working title is Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen.

Director Guillermo Del Toro previously helmed two Hellboy films featuring actor, Ron Pearlman, in the titular role, both movies were received well by critics and performed modestly at the box office. There had long been hope with fans that a third instalment would continue Del Toro's adaptation but the director himself recently scuppered any notion of a third film and with the announcement of this reboot, it's crystal clear now that there will be no third entry.

We also have a bit more information on the darker tone of this reboot compared to Del Toro's movies courtesy of screenwriter, Andrew Cosby, check out his comments when speaking with Silver Screen Beat.

“I can’t really talk about specifics with regard to the story, which they’re keeping a pretty tight lid on at the moment, but I can say that this is a darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy,” Cosby said. “Neil said from the very beginning that he wanted to walk a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie, which was music to my ears, because that’s what I was shooting for in the script, and precisely what Mignola does so well with the comics. Honestly, everyone has just been working overtime to bring that Mignola magic to the big screen. The script is done, but work will continue as we move forward, always trying to make it the best it can be.”

Mike Mignola also previously confirmed director, Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones) will helm the reboot and an early casting announcement of actor, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as the horned hero himself.
