The Witcher Movie in Development for 2017 Release

The Witcher Movie in Development for 2017 Release

Monster Hunting on the Big Screen

By Alex Burns

Now here's something to ponder, an article posted by Platige Films has detailed that a feature-length movie based on Andrzej Sapkowski's The Witcher series is in the works, not only that but it's not far off at all with release set for 2017. Polish company Platige is working with American production company, The Sean Daniel Company (The Mummy franchise) on the movie. Check out a snippet of their press release below.

"Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels are conquering international fantasy book markets and his short story collection, ‘The Last Wish’, had been placed on the New York Times bestseller list. The hero created by Sapkowski, Geralt the witcher, is a monster hunter with superhuman abilities. He is a creature suspended between two worlds – the human and the magical. The Witcher saga is already being compared to the hugely popular ‘Game of Thrones. The film will be an introduction to the Witcher’s world and is planned to be the beginning of a series."

The press release also mentions a "television continuation" so if the movie is successful, expect an interconnect world that then crosses both Film and TV. Platige do also state that the movie will not follow the exact plot of the Witcher games or Sapkowski's related short stories from his 'Last Wish Collection' but instead follow the themes of this fantasy setting and follow Geralt in a fresh adaptation.

If you haven't played any of the Witcher games then you really should, just make sure you've got a spare 300 hours or so first! The world of the Witcher is immersive, engaging and rich in beauty and brutality, the most recent entry in the series, 'The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt' was an unbelievably awesome experience and I myself spent many a long night battling against fearsome monsters and searching out lost treasures. The idea that this epic fantastical world is being developed for film and television is something to be very excited about indeed.

If you aren't familiar with the work of Platige Films they were responsible for cinematics in 'Halo 5' and have already worked on the Witcher series, producing some stupendous stuff for 'The Wild Hunt' . Check out a fearsome trailer in the player below and make sure you take a look at  their site for even more awesome creations.

We'll have more on this story as it develops so make sure to keep it locked right here, at Cape and Cowl!
