'Gambit' - Troubled Production Finds New Director

'Gambit' - Troubled Production Finds New Director

Channing Tatum Stars in 'X-Men' Spin-Off Movie

By Alex Burns

The Gambit solo movie has been attached with so many directors in the past couple of months that it's hard to keep up but now it looks as though 20th Century Fox has finally found their man. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) is in final negotiations to direct the X-Men spin-off. Director Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) was previously attached to helm the movie but when he left the project there was a bit of concern that the whole movie was going to be pushed back, since then several names have been linked with the film including F. Gary Gray, Joe Cornish and Shane Black.

Liman should be a good fit, I have to say that the 'The Bourne Identity' is one of my favourite films of all time and while there's no memory loss involved Gambit is similar to Bourne in some respects. Both characters are drifters, nomads who have never quite been able to settle down in one place for too long before trouble comes their way. Liman has proved he can handle characters with a mysterious background and a troubled soul, expect Gambit to have both as well as a roguish charm and anti-hero fun.

Gambit has always been a fan-favourite within the X-Men universe and has seen some action on the big screen before in actor Taylor Kitsch's disappointing turn in the equally disappointing "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". We're not sure if this previous appearance will connect to the new movie but with the way "Days of Future Past" set about retconning the events in "X-Men: The Last Stand" we're willing to bet no. Channing Tatum stars as the Ragin' Cajun and 'Gambit' is still set for an October 7, 2016 release.
