Ron Howard Takes Over Han Solo Film

Ron Howard Takes Over Han Solo Film

Production Resumes July 10th

By Franco Dionisio

Following the departure of directors Chris Lord and Phil Miller from the upcoming Han Solo film, Lucasfilm have now confirmed that veteran Hollywood director, Ron Howard, will now take the helm, with filming looking to resume on July 10th.

“At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.”

The directorial change-up came as a surprise to many and Ron Howard looks to a safe set of hands to guide the Star Wars spin-off film to completion, production is three quarters of the way through at the time of Lord and Miller's departure over "creative differences". Howard is of course no stranger to big blockbuster entertainment and is a self-confessed fan of the Star Wars series.

“It’s a little opportunity that came my way,” Howard said to the press. “I’ve been a fan forever. It’s gratifying to be asked to lend my voice to the [Star Wars] universe. So many people involved in the ‘Star Wars’ franchise are friends. It’s already been in production, and there’s a lot of really great work there.”

The Han Solo origin film will explore a seven-year period in Han's life from 18 -24 and will provide the back story for how he came to be the smuggler we all know and love in A New Hope

The film stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. Woody Harrelson will play Han’s mentor, a man by the name of Beckett, while Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Michael K. Williams and Phoebe Waller-Bridge are attached in undisclosed roles.

The Han Solo film is still set for a May 25, 2018 release.
