This is the news you're looking for...

Well file this piece of news in the "yes please" folder. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Oscar-nominated filmmaker Stephen Daldry is in early talks to direct a stand-alone Star Wars film focusing on Obi-Wan Kenobi!

Since Disney took over the reigns of the Star Wars franchise audiences have seen the return of the Skywalker story in the form of The Force Awakens and the upcoming The Last Jedi and Episode IX but there is a clear interest in terms of branching out and telling more self-contained stories. Last years first ever Star Wars spin-off was Rogue One and that film was met with critical acclaim and made over $1 billion at the global box office. We have the untitled Han Solo film set for release next year and if this news pans out - a film that would centre on everyone's favourite Jedi master.

Played originally by Alec Guinness in and later Ewan McGregor in the prequel series, Obi-Wan remains one of the most popular legacy characters within the franchise and the potential of a film based on his exploits in the universe either before The Phantom Menace or in the years leading up to A New Hope is staggering.

Stephen Daldry is the Oscar-nominated director behind Billy Elliot and The Hours and sources close to the Hollywood Reporter say that talks are still in the very early stages and there's no script as of yet. The outlet does confirm that if a deal is made, Daldry would then oversee the development of the story and writing of the script with the fine folk at Lucasfilm.

Ewan McGregor has already indicated that he would be open to playing the character again however since the project is still in it's infancy there's no talk of potential castings at this point.

We'll keep you posted on more updates as they come!
